This is one of the bowls I thought was going to be firewood. I got a bird’s-eye maple log from my friend Gary in Vermont that was so checked and split I didn’t think I would be able to get anything out of it. I carefully turned this bowl as thin as I dared, which was still about 1-1/2″ thick, and then painstakingly injected glue into all of the checks and splits and let it sit until the glue was thoroughly dry. I then turned it to about 3/8″ thick and was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t blow up on my lathe. I think the finished product was worth all the fuss of gluing it. SOLD.
