This was another of the bowls that I thought would be nothing but firewood. I got the bird’s-eye maple log from my friend Gary from his yard in Vermont. It was so checked and cracked that I didn’t think I was going to be able to get anything out of it. I carefully turned it to about 1-1/2″ thick, about as thin as I dared with all the checks and cracks, and then filled all of the cracks and checks with glue. I didn’t know if it was going to work. After the glue dried I very carefully turned it down to around 3/8″ thick and to my surprise it didn’t blow apart on my lathe. I think it came out really well despite all the fussing with the glue.
